The Contest in now oficially CLOSED.

No more entries will be accepted.
EDIT: I won't be able to post the results until next month.

Submit the entries to 'Contest Entries' folder.'

Otherwise they might get lot and migt not be included when I start judging them.

THEME 1: Draw a picture of a character/s.
Simply draw a scene including your character. If you want you can also include a short story (up to 300 words) explaining what’s going on in the picture.

THEME 2: Write a short story about a character/s up to 700 words.
The story can be about anything. It can be about an adventure of epic proportions, or a small incident which with some good will can be called and adventure, or it can be showing daily life of a character/s.
If the writers think 700 words is not enough then we can settle for a new limit. I just picked this one based on some short stories I used to write.

» The entry must be drawn and/or written by you. No copying or stealing ideas from others.
» You can enter as many times as you want, even submit entries to both categories, but one person can’t win two places.
» You can also include other characters: be they canon ones or dug from Fan Character Folder.
» Comic strips are not prohibited, yet I discourage making such entries because it will be harder to judge.
» The word limit in written stories should be followed. Remember I will be reading those, so I’m not really eager to read 10 pages of one story followed by another entry of 7 pages. The limit is 700 words and you can go beyond that only by 10% so the absolute maximum is 770 words. Anything more than that will be disqualified.
» Drawn entries should look like they had some effort put into it.  I know it might sound like I’m telling you how to draw, but in general if you want to win a drawing contest a messy sketch done in ten minutes is not a good example of an entry.

And maybe just my general advice, since I will be the judge, I discourage you from overusing Steban in your stories. If your really want, you can use him, but from my perspective, since I know he’s a popular character, getting dozens of stories featuring one character’s awesome adventures with Steban would get you less points in originality. So be creative and maybe try including some other characters that got less attention so far.
And also concerning my own fan-characters: including theme in your story won’t get you any additional points. I want to make that clear. You want to include one of them? Cool, but you should keep in mind that since they’re mine I’ll also judge how in-character they are.

» a drawing of one character (coloured and shaded) by PatiLee
They will depend on the number of entries, but for starters I can offer to the winner in each category a picture of one character (coloured and shaded). The more entries a theme gets the more prizes. There’s no point in setting three places if only two people submit their entries.

The end of the contest is set to September 1st, but if enough people will demand it – it can be changed.

I have a question but I don't know where to put it. Should I ask it here or in a note?
PatiLee Featured By Owner Jul 22, 2014
I don't think it matters.
Just go ahead and ask.

Okay I just a have couple questions. I'm sorry if this is a annouyance in any way, I was wanting to make some fan characters but when these questions popped up I wasn't to sure on what to do or how to answer them.

If a person wanted to make a fan character but couldn't draw well on the art program(s) they had, would they be able to use a free domestic dog lineart from DA so long as it's properly credited and doesn't go against the original artist rules?

Are fan characters with handicaps and/or some sort of disability allowed as long as they have a valid reason on why they have it?

I had another question about albino colors in fan characters but it got scraps for the extreme hot weather and how they wouldn't last very long. Thank you for taking the time in reading my questions. c:

I don't think there are any special rulesconcerning character creation, so I believe using a lineart is okay as long as it's credited. Same goes for disabilities. It's your character, so it depends on you how you want it to look like or behave.

So any character would be fine as long as it's not really out of place. Like for example... It's not a pink sparkle woof with flowing long hair or a characterstylized after some theme other tan Wild West or just w dog with robotic leg. So I think the only requirement is that the character should fit the theme of the group and the general world rules that Skailla described in one of her journals.

So we are allowed to create our own fan characters for Up and Ahead?
PatiLee Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2014
Of course!
There's even a template for that!
